Murhof Legends 2020 abgesagt – an Alternativen wird bereits gearbeitet
Während in der Weststeiermark Freude über die Durchführung der Gösser Open herrscht, erreichte den GC Murhof eine Hiobsbotschaft aus Wentworth. Die Staysure Tour hat völlig unerwartet und im Gegensatz zu allen anderen Touren die Saison 2020 komplett gestrichen. „Ganz ehrlich, wir waren sprachlos. Die Arbeiten im Hintergrund sind bereits voll angelaufen und wir hätten uns einiges vorstellen können. Aber eine Absage gerade jetzt, wo alle anderen Touren wieder starten, hätten wir nie erwartet. Man muss sich das auch einmal aus der Sicht der Spieler vorstellen, die jetzt ein ganzes Jahr ohne Turniere auskommen müssen – das ist wirklich ein harter Schlag“, sagt Organisator Gary Stangl.
„Mit dem hätte ich nie gerechnet. Es war klar, dass wir heuer nicht sehr viele Turniere spielen würden, aber eine komplette Absage ist ein Wahnsinn“, so Österreichs Golf-Legende Markus Brier. Nach einer ersten Schockphase wird im Organisationskomitee am Murhof aber bereits an einer sehr attraktiven Alternative gearbeitet. „Gemeinsam mit unseren Testimonials Barry Lane und Markus Brier sowie unseren wichtigsten Partnern haben wir eine sehr interessante Idee im Kopf und prüfen nun die Durchführbarkeit. Im Moment schaut es sehr gut aus, dass wir die europäischen Allzeitgrößen trotz der Absage der Staysure Tour auch in diesem Jahr in der Steiermark begrüßen können“, hält sich Stangl über die konkreten Pläne noch ein wenig bedeckt. Keinen Zweifel gibt es hingegen über die Austragung der nächsten regulären Murhof Legends. „Wir haben nicht weniger als vier Termine im Jahr 2021 bei der Tour für uns reserviert, im Moment geht unsere Präferenz aber klar in Richtung Mai“, ergänzt Stangl.

Staysure Tour’s 2020 season cancelled
The Staysure Tour, Europe’s professional golf Tour for players aged 50 and older, today announced the cancellation of its 2020 season.
The decision was taken following consultation with the Tour’s membership and the Tour’s Medical Advisers based on the additional risk associated with the age demographic of the players and the complexities of staging events across multiple territories. It was today ratified by the Staysure Tour Tournament Committee following earlier approval by the European Tour Board of Directors and Executive Leadership Team. All 2020 playing exemption categories will be extended to the 2021 season.
Mark Aspland, Head of the Staysure Tour, said: “This decision was not taken lightly but we feel it is the most responsible course of action following consultation with all of our stakeholders, and taking into account feedback from our players around the complexities of international travel at the current time.
“While professional golf is slowly returning with the necessary safety protocols, we have to recognise the additional risk associated with the age demographic of the Staysure Tour membership, alongside the challenges of implementing the requisite health strategy across the multiple territories we play in.
“I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank Ryan Howsam and Staysure who have been incredibly supportive throughout this process, allowing us to arrive at this difficult decision. We look forward to working together, and with our other partners, across the 2021 season.”
David J Russell, Chairman of the Staysure Tour Tournament Committee and a member of the European Tour’s Board of Directors, said: “As professional golfers, we all want to be out on the golf course competing again. However, these are truly unique circumstances caused by a global pandemic.
“We had to acknowledge the age demographic of the Staysure Tour players presents additional associated risks. We are therefore supportive of this difficult but responsible decision to cancel the 2020 Staysure Tour season and we look forward to working together with Mark, Ryan Howsam, Staysure and all our other partners on planning for 2021.”
